Self Tanning Lotion Application Tips

By Haywood Hunter

Not long ago, a healthy tan was something that most people wanted. However, many people are thinking twice before getting out in the sun. After all, there is the possibility of cancer or skin damage to consider. Thankfully, you can have the kind of tan that you dream of and it doesn't have to hurt your skin. All you have to do is purchase a quality self tanning lotion product, and here are tips for application.

Before you start, make sure to choose a high quality product that has excellent reviews. Also, make sure it is made for your kind of skin. Some products work well with all skin types, but make sure to read the labels. For example, you may end up with a tan that is too dark or not dark enough.

Before application is the best time to shave your legs and other areas. Otherwise the cream may not be as effective. After you shave, use a good skin conditioner and wait several hours before using the sunless suntan cream.

Exfoliate your skin beforehand, and one of the best ways to exfoliate is in the shower. You can scrub the skin well with a washcloth or special equipment designed to exfoliate. This removes much of the dead skin that sits on the top layer of your skin. If dead skin cells are not removed before applying your suntan cream, they may come off afterwards and this can affect your tan.

You should not apply suntan cream as soon as you get out of the shower. Give your skin enough time to dry completely. This will make the products absorb better. Most people use some type of protection for the palms of the hands. Tanning is not usually advised for your palms because they may turn yellow or orange. To prevent this from happening you can wash the hands frequently or use some rubber gloves. Special tanning mitts are also available.

Start to apply lotion on one area of your body at a time. For instance, you may wish to begin with the legs. Once you are finished with your legs, you can move on to the stomach. Places like knees and elbows may absorb lotions more readily, so you may need to use less in these parts. Also, check the label to see if the product is approved for your face.

Many sunless suntan products work best if applied in thin layers like paint. You may wish to try a small amount all over and then see what happens. You also can use a "test area" of your skin, before you begin. Choose a place that is not noticeable, apply the cream, and wait at least 8 hours. This lets you see what your tan will look like.

Once you are finished, avoid lying down or putting on clothing for about half an hour or so. That will keep your cream from rubbing off. Wait a day before you attempt to shower or enter the water. Also, remember to give the lotion plenty of time to work, and use top quality products like one from Sun Laboratories.
